A practical survival guide for the first 30 days and beyond

Well, Fuck.
I Got Laid Off.

What to do, what can wait, and how to take care of yourself while figuring out what comes next.

By Nicole Koestel

First, I'm sorry. This sucks.

Maybe you saw it coming. Maybe you didn't. Maybe you're devastated, relieved, furious, terrified, or cycling through all four before breakfast.

Whatever you're feeling, there's no wrong way to feel it.

I've been laid off five times in six years. So while I can't promise you a magical career breakthrough, I can tell you a thing or two about surviving the first few days without completely losing your shit.

Here's something I've learned: losing your job can shake a whole lot more than your finances. It can mess with your confidence, your identity, your sense of safety, and the future you thought you were building.

And suddenly, everyone has advice.

Update your résumé! Start networking! Take a vacation! Reinvent yourself! Have you considered consulting? Enjoy this time off!

Jesus. Can we have a minute?

This guide is that minute. And a practical plan for what comes after it.

It's designed to help you handle the things that actually matter, without turning your unemployment into another full-time job you can never clock out of.

A few things before we start

  • Handle time-sensitive tasks as soon as you can.
  • Your financial reality matters. Some people need to start searching for work immediately. Others have more breathing room.
  • You don't have to complete every checkbox to make progress.
  • You are allowed to feel like a mess and still take care of business.
  • You don't have to figure your whole life out today.

Let's start with what's right in front of you.

When did you get laid off?
